Cool Stuff Local Mensans Are Doing

Harry Callahan had a letter in the Public Pulse of the Omaha World-Herald on June 19: “It was arguably politics that caused Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey to attempt to remove David Sokol from the MECA board. But it was most certainly politics that led the mayor to reverse his position. This action by the financially large donors to the stadium project was a quintessential example of the so-called Golden Rule: ‘He who has the gold, makes the rules.’ It makes one wonder why an accomplished, talented individual such as Mr. Sokol would even want to participate in this atmosphere. But he is one of many who have stepped up. It would appear that Fahey, a Democrat, has borrowed a page from the Republicans in regard to his attempt to exert political pressure on another by using ‘good ol’ boy’ tactics. But this time, those tactics came back to slap him.”

David McCord had a letter in the Public Pulse on June 5: “I doubt that U.S. Sen. Hilary Clinton would have fought for Michigan and Florida representation if Sen. Barack Obama had won both states. What is it about the banning of delegates from these states that she couldn’t understand? Clinton agreed to the punishment until she needed the votes to try to make a showing against Obama. Then, like a child that changes rules when losing a game, she decides that the votes should be counted. Never mind that only Clinton campaigned in either state or that only she was on the ballot in Michigan. The Democratic Party looked ridiculous for caving in to Clinton’s tantrums. She tries to mimic Obama’s change agenda, but she is just another Washington insider who plays the same old political games to twist things her way. Why do the conservatives slam Obama and give Clinton a free pass? She is the more vulnerable candidate, so they wanted her to win the nomination, of course. If she somehow does, prepare for regurgitated propaganda and all the other baggage hidden in the Clinton’s closet. This mudslinging is the only way the Republicans can win, as long as Sen. John Mc Cain remains tangled in President Bush’s coattails."

Karen Kozak will be in 2009’s Who’s Who of American Women.

Team Mensa played trivia at Buffalo Wild Wings on June 10. We had fun and did pretty well really, but didn’t rank nationally until the Speed game when Nick got first in the nation with a perfect score, and the rest of us weren’t too far behind only missing one question.

Rod Ruff will host trivia contests at the Omaha Science Fiction and Fantasy Festival (OSFest) July 11-13: Friday, "Are You Smarter Than a Con Guest?" and on Sunday, an anime-themed version of "Gyparody?" (Jeopardy!) (You can learn more at http://www.osfes.org.) Rod’s promos for the Festival are on www.kxvo.com

Tami Whitney has written a reflection for the Daily Mass reading for July 12. Go to www.creighton.edu/CollaborativeMinistry/daily.htm.

You Go Girls, our local CultureQuest team, scored 158 out of 285, which is better than it sounds.
